PHP Developer Salary 2026: US, UK and Germany Compared

Short answer

In the UK, the median advertised salary for permanent PHP developer roles was £50,000 in the six months to 18 October 2026, according to ITJobsWatch. US government data has no PHP-specific figure; web developers and digital designers earned a median $99,520 in May 2025. In Germany, gehalt.de reports a median of €68,419 a year for PHP developers.

The ITJobsWatch median for UK permanent PHP developer roles jumped from £42,500 to £50,000 between the same six-month periods of 2025 and 2026. That’s an increase of about 18 percent. Before you rewrite every pay band, though, note the sample: 137 salaries quoted this year, 71 a year earlier.

That’s the honest state of PHP salary data. There are numbers, they come from different methods, and every one of them needs a footnote. This article collects the most useful ones, with source and date, and explains what moves them.

PHP developer salaries by country

Here are the main public benchmarks. All are gross annual pay for full-time roles unless stated otherwise.

The US figures come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, which doesn’t break pay down by programming language. Most PHP roles fall under one of the two occupations shown. Which one depends on the job, and the gap between them is more than $36,000.

The UK London figure needs a warning. ITJobsWatch shows a London median of £100,000, but it’s based on only 13 adverts. Treat it as noise, not a benchmark.

Why the role matters more than the language

German government data shows the same split as the US. The Federal Employment Agency’s pay atlas reports a 2025 median of €5,026 a month for web developers and €6,301 for software developers. That’s a gap of about €1,275 a month for people who might all write PHP.

So when someone says “PHP pays badly”, they’re often comparing WordPress theme work with Java backend roles. Ask what the job actually involves. Building marketing sites lands near web developer pay. Owning business logic and APIs, with queues and data models behind them, lands near backend or software developer pay, whatever the language.

This also tells you how to position a role. If you need someone to run a complex Laravel or Symfony backend, benchmark against software developer pay. Advertise it at web developer rates and you’ll attract web developers.

How experience changes pay

The UK data doesn’t split by experience, but German data does. gehalt.de reports these average annual salaries for PHP developers:

Germany: average PHP developer salary by experience (gross per year)
  1. Under 3 years60,490 €
  2. 3 to 6 years62,774 €
  3. 7 to 9 years65,869 €
  4. Over 9 years76,997 €

The shape is interesting. Pay rises slowly through the first three bands, by a couple of thousand euros each, even though those are the years when people learn the most. Then it jumps. After nine years it’s over €11,000 higher than the band before. That matches what many teams see: the step into senior or lead roles, with responsibility for architecture or people, pays more than tenure alone.

The UK spread hints at the same thing. From the 25th percentile (£40,000) to the 90th (£74,000) is a factor of almost two. What separates the two ends is covered in senior PHP developer skills.

Company size and location

In Germany, company size moves pay more than region. gehalt.de reports averages of about €62,700 a year at companies with fewer than 100 employees and about €82,100 at companies with more than 20,000. Regional gaps are smaller: Baden-Württemberg and Hesse pay the most, the eastern states the least, with roughly €1,000 a month between top and bottom.

For remote roles the location question gets tricky. Some employers pay by head office, others by where the employee lives. My view: if you hire remotely and pay by home location, you’ll lose strong people in cheaper regions to companies that pay one national band. A single band is fairer and easier to explain.

Small companies rarely win on salary. They can win on shorter decision paths, more influence over the product and genuine flexibility. That works when it’s true. It doesn’t when it’s only in the ad.

Why sources disagree

Salary numbers come from three kinds of source, and each has its own bias.

Government statistics, such as the BLS or Germany’s Federal Employment Agency, use employer reports or large surveys. They’re the most reliable, but they group by occupation, not language, and they lag. The German 2025 figures only appeared in October 2026.

Job ad trackers like ITJobsWatch use advertised salaries. They’re current and specific to job titles, but they only cover ads that state a salary, and samples can be small.

Self-reported portals like gehalt.de collect figures from users. They’re detailed and up to date, but the people who submit aren’t necessarily representative.

For hiring, use at least two kinds. Candidates check these sites too.

What to offer

A worked example. You’re hiring a PHP developer with about five years’ experience for a Laravel backend at a 300-person company in Manchester. The UK median is £50,000 and the 75th percentile £60,000. A backend role with real ownership justifies the upper half. An offer around £55,000 to £60,000 is competitive; £48,000 will be hard; £65,000 gives you room for a standout candidate.

Remember that salary isn’t the full cost. In the UK, employer National Insurance at 15 percent above £5,000 a year adds £6,750 on a £50,000 salary before pension contributions. Our article on the cost of hiring a developer works through the numbers for the US and the UK, plus Germany.

Put the range in the job ad; our PHP developer job description shows how. If you’re weighing a contractor instead, current rates are in our article on PHP developer hourly rates.

If the budget won’t stretch to a full-time hire but the application still needs to move forward, an outside partner can step in. Studios like OnlineBuilders take on development and operations for existing PHP applications.

Open ITJobsWatch or the BLS handbook for your market now, find the closest job title, and compare its median with the offer you had in mind. If yours is lower, you need a good reason why someone would still say yes.

Questions people ask

What does a junior PHP developer earn?

In the UK, the 25th percentile of advertised PHP developer salaries was £40,000 and the 10th percentile £28,300 in the six months to 18 October 2026. In Germany, gehalt.de puts PHP developers with under three years' experience at about €60,500 a year on average. Entry-level offers straight out of university are often below both.

Do Laravel developers earn more than other PHP developers?

There's no reliable public data that splits pay by framework. Salary sources group by job title or occupation. Experience, location, company size and responsibility move pay far more than Laravel versus Symfony.

Why are PHP salaries lower than Java or Go salaries?

Partly because of the mix of roles. Many PHP jobs are web development roles, which official statistics pay below backend or software engineering roles. A PHP developer owning a complex backend is usually benchmarked against software developer pay, not web developer pay.

How often should a developer's salary be reviewed?

Once a year is the norm. The UK PHP developer median rose about 18 percent year on year in ITJobsWatch's October 2026 data. Teams that skip reviews for several years quickly fall behind the market.
